Inspired by a celebratory feeling regarding the jump I had made in quality as an artist, regardless of my inconsistent ability at the time to replicate said quality. I made this as a cocky affirmation towards myself, to stay motivated and continue progress within my skills.
Continuing my chaos to order approach, I had become intrigued by the idea of making my art look as 3d as possible.
Specifically, I quite liked the look of Playstation 2 era 3d models.
Whether it be the stylized realism of the Silent Hill series or the uncanny anime look of S.M.T.
There was something not just charming but timeless about it. The mix of textures that do just enough to convince and please from a calculated distance, mapped over polygonal bodies with just enough shapes to let the before mentioned texturing create illusions of depth not truly there.
I knew I could paint “3d” as in realism quite well, but now I was studying the flow of every stroke to paint “3d” à la CGI. The character designs and illustrations of Kazuma Kaneko would be a major point of study.
At the time of this work, I was playing quite a bit of a game called P.S.O.2: N.G.S. My created character did well for reference even if I didn’t accurately recreate her.
