SPECTACLE.

A favourite of mine for sure.
This piece taught me that adding as much washed out looking detail as possible, only to then CRANK the contrast creates an aggressive sense of texture despite the loss of detail.
It was very much a long test of “trusting the process” but I love how it came out.
I really wanted to play around with the layers of my dolls in this piece more than I ever have before.
The concept of the scorpion style bondage pose getting stretched to a point of deconstructing someone like they’re lego was inspired from what I remember as being a mix of Shintaro Kago’s more surreal style of ero guro, Glados from Portal and potentially the Donna Haraway scene from Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.
Pulling this off was gonna be tricky and confusing from a composition standpoint, so to do so I created multiple 3d references of a humanoid figure that I had modeled, then posed them in an upwards loop and angled them differently along various points of the loop while keeping the pose the same. Then I merged all of those pictures together so I could then reference where each layer of the body getting pulled back would accurately be in both position and angle.
The evil eyeball-camera, the bondage, the stripping back of layers, the euphoric look despite the mangling.
Spectacle is well, the destruction of spectacle. Can be taken literally or figuratively.
It’s a brutal piece.
It’s setting is the same place as Face Plates. The Bloodbounds. Though it has seen some more aesthetic development.
